Breasts are body tissues made up of blood vessels, fat glands, milk ducts, connective tissue, and intricate lymphatic vessels. The job of the lymphatic system is to remove viruses, bacteria, toxins, debris, cancer cells, and other unwanted material from the body. The lymphatic fluid leaves the breast tissue through a network of tiny lymphatic vessels that empty into a system of kidney-shaped glands, which filter lymph fluid called lymph nodes.
These lymph nodes are linked throughout the body and act as a major line of defense against the spread of disease in the body. When lymphatic vessels and nodes become restricted through lack of physical movement, or clothing that is restrictive, the body's defense system begins to break down and disease can set in.
It is well known that breast tissue is very sensitive to toxins and pollutants in the environment. Additionally, the breast tissue have a tendency to absorb and store high levels of chemicals from our environment. A variety of studies of human breast milk indicates an alarming traces of household cleaning products to be present in the breasts. It is, therefore, believed that there could be a very real connection with the onset of breast disease from these toxins.
The purpose of self breast massage is to help flush toxins from the lymphatic system that may be stored in the breast tissue and to bring needed nutrients to the tissues. Self massage is an effective wellness technique for breasts that women can practice to increase circulation and movement of the lymphatic fluid in the breast to help promote breast health. Some believe there may be a correlation between chronic poor breast drainage and susceptibility to malignant diseases of the breasts and that massage may, in fact, turn out to be one of the most effective ways for women to maintain and promote breast health.
Gentle-to-moderate rubbing, kneading, squeezing and stroking with the hands are sufficient movements to produce increased lymph and blood flow to the breast. It is not necessary to use hard pressure or other techniques which cause pain. The use of olive oil or a good quality vegetable oil can help to make the hands glide more easily across the skin of the breasts.
Massaging your own breasts only takes about 5 - 15 minutes and may be done 3-4 times per week. The level of touch should only be light to medium pressure at most, delivered with full "palm-of-the-hand" contact, or broad contact with the underside of the fingers. Do not use very deep pressure as breast tissue is very sensitive to touch and lymphatic drainage only takes a little pressure to effectively move lymph through the breast tissue.
3 Easy Steps To Giving Yourself A Breast Massage
1. Using the fingers, gently smooth the skin away from the nipple. Do not use pressure, as deep pressure can flatten the lymphatic vessel and stop the flow of toxins and fluids. Also, make your strokes slow, not fast.
2. Gently massage the breast with a kneading-like motion, using lifting and pressing movements.
3. Carefully use your hands to slowly twist the breast in a clock-wise and counterclockwise direction, however, be careful not to put much tension on the breast.
If during your breast massage you notice any lumps, discontinue with the massage and consult with your physician as soon as possible.
